Nature exploration

  • The largest mixed broad-leaved forest of the Flanders Meerdaal wood – Heverlee Forest (2000 hectares): 100 kilometres walking paths, 48 km mountain bike tracks, educational ponds, educational forest path, guides and educational programs under the professional guidance of foresters and nature guides.

  • In the Dutch book about ’15 walking paths through the Dijleland’ you will find 6 walks in the Meerdaal Wood and the Heverlee Forest; two of them in the environment of the Youth Residence De Brink. This book is available in the Tourist Office of Leuven.
  • The nature reserve Doode Bremde is for instance a breeding place for indigenous birds and lies on the way for migratory birds. You can go for a trip with a nature guide and actively participate at environment work. For more information: friends of the Heverlee Forest and Meerdaal Wood

 

Sports and recreation

  • In collaboration with the organisation Ki-Vif,  the Youth Residence De Kluis offers outdoor activities for youth movements, schools, enterprises and families. Those activities are offered to residential groups as well as to daily visitors.
  • On the rope trail you will enjoy pleasant and challenging activities. You can explore this rope trail for a day in the middle of the nature, or use it as a teambuilding experience for the whole group. Discover your own courage limits and learn to know your companions better during the defiant exercises. The professional leaders guarantee a safe and responsible way of using the rope trail.
  • Mountain bike: From the residence on, you can easily connect on the 48 kilometres long indicated bike paths through the forest. In the opinion of the connoisseurs, those paths belong to the most beautiful of the Flanders. You can hire mountain bikes at Ki-Vif.
  • Going down the Dyle River by raft through the marvellous Dyle valley. From the residence on, you have a nice footpath bringing you to the point of departure. To book your rafting trip, contact Ki-Vif.
  • Orientation run: The Youth Residence De Kluis disposes over its own orientation track and a ready to start package for free! For sportive groups it is a nice way to discover the domain. And you can also use it as base for your forest game.
  • Bicycle trips: Discover the path of the AD, a pleasant trip along the tree figures of AD, commented on MP3 by Ad and a forester. Or follow the bicycle network passing through the marvellous landscapes. The cycle route passes over sunken paths, along fields and pastures, by the banks of different rivers such as the Demer, the Dyle, the Voer and de Yse. Parks, castles and abbeys can all be reached by bike. And then you can take a rest on the nice village squares, where you have the occasion to taste the delicious local beer and meals.
  • The environment is perfectly appropriated to make more days trips. The GR 512 path brings you to beautiful spots. Fluo safety sets for walking and dropping are available on the Youth Residence.
  • Other possibilities in the environment are: horse riding in the Manege Meerdaalhof, ice skating in Haasrode, swimming in the Sportplaza and the Attraction Park Walibi, accessible by train.

 

Cultural discovery

  • Leuven is a historical student city at 12 kilometres of the residence. It is easily accessible by public transport.
  • In Leuven you will find the Scouts and Guides Museum. Started in 1969 this museum is the largest and most complete scout museum in Europe. Everything is presented by objects, uniforms, signs, flags, pictures, documents and so on ”¦
  • Brussels is also easily accessible by public transport.
  • A visit to the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren is surely worth it.
